The Atlantic coast of New Jersey, with its beaches and boardwalks, stretches from Sandy Hook in the north to Cape May in the south. Fresh ocean breezes fan 127 miles of sandy beaches. Drive between cities or catch the SeaStreak Ferry from Manhattan's South Street Seaport.   However you begin, your first stop should be the town of Atlantic Highlands,  "The Other Seaport ". The name says exactly what it is geographically. The town  overlooks where the Atlantic Ocean and Raritan Bay meet at Sandy Hook.   Atlantic Highlands is also a meeting point historically, and its hills mark the highest point on the eastern seaboard of the U.S. Mount Mitchell.

For thousands of years, the original inhabitants lived along its cliffs and creeks, where there is still evidence of them. Here, the Lenape first encountered Europeans, and soon were trading with them. Fifty-six years after Henry Hudson's 1609 visit, English settlers bought the whole peninsula from the Lenape and called it Portland Poynt.

With one of the largest Marinas and it's close proximity to the beaches of Sandy Hook, Atlantic Highlands is sure to start your trip off the right way.  Here are some basic facts to get you started.
